GYS was organized in 1990 to provide an advanced and extraordinary opportunity for singers in second through twelfth grade. Under the direction of Founder, Conductor & Music Director, Lynn Urda, and Associate Director Carol Wyatt, the choir is an internationally recognized children's chorus, well-known for its mastery of challenging repertoire and exceptionally high musical standard. The faculty and staff of Gwinnett Young Singers are dedicated to professionalism in Music Education and strive to share the power and beauty of a wide variety of choral music. The most unique characteristic of the chorus is its pure and resonant vocal tone which continues to captivate audiences and gain spirited ovations. In recognition of this exquisite sound and disciplined musicianship, the chorus has received numerous invitations to perform at both the national and international level.
The Gwinnett Young Singers of Atlanta is a Grammy winning Children’s Choir who have been frequent guests of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra since 1996. The choir won a Grammy Award for their performance in the highly acclaimed CD recording of John Adams’ On The Transmigration Of Souls with the ASO & Chorus. In 2004 they were nomined for a Grammy Award for their performance in the internationally acclaimed recording of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana with the ASO and Chorus. After performing two seasons of Christmas With Robert Shaw in 1996 & 1997, the singers have performed for an additional twelve annual holiday seasons in Christmas With the ASO. The Young Singers are also featured on the Telarc recording of Puccini’s La Boheme with the ASO and Chorus. On January 27, 2011 the GYS Chamber Choir (a mixed, SATB ensemble) will perform at the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) conference in Savannah, Georgia. The Young Singers have performed for thousands of Music Educators at the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) conferences in South Carolina and Tennessee, and two performed at two recent performances at the GMEA conference in Savannah, Georgia.
The Gwinnett Young Singers program offers age-appropriate choirs for children in grades two through twelve for both changed and unchanged voices. The Gwinnett Young Singers is governed by a parent Board of Advisors and is organized as a non-profit, educational organization. Membership is based on vocal ability, motivation, commitment, and enthusiasm. Parents are expected to support their youth's commitment to the choir.
